CPC's CEO speaks to packed
King County Council Meeting

On June 25, CPC’s Chief Executive Officer, Shirley Havenga, participated in a King County Council Town Hall meeting held at the Shoreline Conference Center.  The meeting drew more than 400 audience members, the largest attendance ever for a Town Hall meeting.

The Town Hall was an opportunity to examine the innovative Mental Illness & Drug Dependency Action Plan. This action plan describes the service needs and service gaps in our system and details the new services that would be put in place to reduce chronic homelessness and unnecessary involvement in the criminal justice and emergency medical systems.  The plan would be funded through a 1/10th of a percent increase in the sales tax and can be approved by Council vote alone, with an estimated $47 million annual funds.

Ms. Havenga was invited to be a panel member and provide a presentation to the Council members and town hall attendees addressing how the tax increase would provide a full continuum of treatment, housing and case management services. She spoke to the council and the public regarding the growing need for the County to support programs that divert people suffering from mental illnesses and chemical dependency away from jail cells and into proper treatment facilities.
