CPC’s Housing Program honored with Exemplary Service Award

he King County Mental Health, Chemical Abuse & Dependency Services Division presented Shirley Havenga, Community Psychiatric Clinic’s (CPC) Chief Executive Officer, and Mike Nielsen, CPC’s Residential Services Director, with the 2003 Exemplary Service Award for Service Innovation on October 2, 2003. King County Executive Ron Sims presided over the event and congratulated CPC for its “creative practice and problem solving to address service gaps or unmet needs.”

In his letter of nomination, Harry Thomas, Executive Director of Seattle Housing Authority, wrote, “…CPC’s efforts in 2002-2003 represent a major accomplishment in service innovation and program development that is unprecedented in its contribution to end homelessness and provide recovery opportunities for persons served in the mental health system.”

Residential Services Director Mike Nielsen said, “We are all extremely proud of this award. The Board and staff at CPC have made an extraordinary effort to assure that the availability of quality housing is a core part of the recovery services we offer. This award would not be possible without their dedicated efforts and the efforts of many other private individuals, agencies, funders and communities who have been our steadfast partners in developing so many new and innovative projects over the years.”

This past year has been one of growth for CPC’s Housing Program, having created or preserved over 240 beds of community housing in 11 new projects. New projects include:

• The Willows – In partnership with the University of Washington’s Parent-Child Assistance Program (PCAP), this 15-unit facility will house homeless pregnant women with co-occurring disorders. Ground breaking begins Spring 2004.

• Albion Place – A new 12-unit independent living apartment building. Ground breaking begins Spring 2004.

• Cedar House – An eight-bedroom home specifically for 18-21 year olds with mental illness, CPC began operation in May 2003.

• Courage House – A partnership with Eastside NAMI member Nan Humble, this house is the beginning of CPC’s expansion of housing services on the Eastside of King County. A four-bedroom cluster house located near CPC’s newly opened outpatient treatment site in Bellevue.
