United Way Day of Caring

Each year, the United Way of King County kicks off its annual campaign with the Day of Caring. This year’s day was held on September 26, 2003 and 7,000 volunteers from 190 companies worked on 300 community service projects across King County, amounting to more than $800,000 in donated labor. CPC was fortunate to have two projects at residential facilities this year: one at the El Rey and one at Cedar House.

Community Psychiatric Clinic began operation of Cedar House in May 2003. It’s mission is to serve mentally ill young adults, ages 18-21. The yard had seen better days. Twelve volunteers from Microsoft Corporation worked from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. weeding, planting, digging, trimming and gathering yard waste. They even discovered a quaint brick walkway that had grown over with grass. Several trips to the dump were made with all the clippings and branches they accumulated.

Volunteers from American Red Cross and Washington Federal Savings worked hard indoors at the El Rey, cleaning and organizing. Residents now have full access to exercise equipment, pool tables and art supplies, and Pam Vinlove, El Rey Program Manager, commented, “Everyone had a lot of fun.”
