Annual Report 2002 A Look Back…
The visionary work of the founding board members and professionals gained momentum as the rest of the country caught up with the landmark federal legislation signed into law by President Kennedy in 1963 — the Community Mental Health Act. The legislation established community mental health centers and helped define key concepts of comprehensiveness, continuity of care, accessibility of services, community involvement, and accountability and responsiveness to the community. This marked the beginning of a nationwide movement in the treatment of mental illness. President Kennedy called for a “bold new approach” in the treatment of persons with mental illness. The collective individual activism of everyone who has supported Community Psychiatric Clinic resounds in the request from our 35th president: “Ask not what your country can do for you…ask what you can do for your country.” Community Psychiatric Clinic responded with enthusiastic growth. We have been able to accomplish what our early founders believed possible due largely to the support of the community we serve and the consumers and family members who depend upon our work. We extend our sincere gratitude to the many dedicated, caring and talented staff members, board members, community members and organizations who have believed in our mission for over fifty years. It is with great pride and appreciation of those who came before us that we dedicate our 50th Anniversary Edition Annual Report. Shirley
